The First Pop Star to Break Through from South Africa?

Pop, Synth-Pop

Olisha Naicker has released her debut single, “Strangers”, opening up a whole new audience to a singer and dancer who already has a huge social media following online due to her popularity in Asia (due to her Indian heritage) and her home country of South Africa. Few South African pop stars have attempted to venture out from the comfort of their home surroundings, with the only notable musicians to have broken through previously based in a more standard roots/world music base.

“Strangers” is a straight-ahead pop/dance/soul ditty which doesn’t preach about world issues or lay on thick her background. Music without an agenda is a welcome relief!

Vispa steps back in time for retro synth-esque ‘Cosmic Force’

Dance, Disco/Techno, Electronica, Synth-Pop

It’s not often that you get to hear music coming from Iran, but it’s a refreshing change to see what’s happening musically in other parts of the world as electronic artist, Vispa, drops his retro-infused dance track, ‘Cosmic Force’.

You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that ‘Cosmic Force’ is straight out of an 80s video game with its pulsating drum beat, resonating synths and sense of tension building. But this is perhaps the best part of Vispa’s music; his ability to draw on style of old and bring them into the modern day.

Not only this, but there’s certainly a dance factor to his music, made all the better with the expertly timed drops and changes in instrumentation throughout the track.

However, much like ‘Cosmic Force’ is a true space-explorer of a track, Vispa is an explorer of music himself, constantly experimenting with genre and sound to gain more ideas for his new material.

Categorising his sound under the sub-genres of ‘synth-pop’, ‘space music’ and ‘electro-orchestral’, Vispa finds inspiration from all over the musical world, taking influence from other notable artists such as classical legend Hans Zimmer, Tangerine Dream, Depeche Mode and synth icons, The Pet Shop Boys.

As Rob Green states: ‘Synth music has crept from the shadows (where it has been hiding since the mid-eighties) and is infiltrating even mainstream music these days. The majority of bands in the charts once again have a synthesizer. Synthwave takes it further, continuing the impact made by the early electronic pioneers (Kraftwerk, Human League, Soft Cell, Numan, Ultravox, Visage, John Foxx, with those incredible synthesized machine sounds fused to emotional, anthemic and impactful songs.

**Rob Green performs with The Department, was signed to Feargal Sharkey’s label and has remixed for artists as revered as Robbie Williams and William Orbit… Johnny Normal meanwhile performs with his post-punk electronic rock-pop group, and has toured with the likes of Adam Ant and Blancmange. (he’s also a Swine Flu survivor – surviving a 7 month battle with the disease back in 2014!). Johnny hosts a regular radio show promoting independent synth music.

Jo Cooper releases feel good electropop single ‘Touch The Sky’

Electronica, Pop, Synth-Pop, Uncategorized

Having performed on Australia’s number  1 breakfast show ‘The Morning Show’ as well as performing for Rugby League team The South Sydney Rabbitohs during half-time, Sydney singer Jo Cooper is now aiming to push her talents global with this feel good electro-pop single, ‘Touch the Sky’.

The fun party song features an explosively catchy chorus and energetic synth-driven instrumental produced by Brisbane beatsmith Stuart Stuart. Australia may be exiting summer right now, but here in the Northern hemisphere it’s right on time.

A self-confessed workaholic, Jo has previously dealt with work stress that left her so ill she had to be rushed to hospital. She also recently had to deal with a fraudulent producer who used her for a lot of money and has since been charged.  ‘Touch the Sky’ sees the artist lyrically relinquishing all the stress in her life and focusing on the good.

It’s an uplifting song, about brushing off the day and going out and feeling good about life’, explains Jo Cooper.

This single follows the success of her 2013 song ‘Stupid Boy’, a track which gained international attention with its Ministry of Sound house remix. Produced by London electronic duo Hoxton Whores, the remix climbed into the top 100 reaching 20 on UK’s Music Week Club Charts.

In 2014 Jo released her highly anticipated debut EP, Running Free, along with her empowering single ‘Don’t Turn Back’, skilfully tackling the heavy topic of domestic abuse.

You cannot help but fall in love with Jo, one of those personalities that makes you smile when she’s around. Jo’s voice is beautiful and full of energy and her talent is only that of a star in the making’ – Carmelo Pizzino (Dancing With The Stars)

Her debut album is now in the works, due for release mid 2016, with single ‘Touch the Sky’ out May 20th.

The HARDKISS feat. Kazaky – ‘Strange Moves’ (new single)

Pop, Synth-Pop

Coming to the UK and already a prime candidate for radio play, ‘Strange Moves’ is the new single from dance pop progressive pop group The HARDKISS and collaborator Kazaky.

Having already won national music awards for Best Album and Best Single at the Yuna Awards in their native Ukraine, the Kiev based group are already hugely popular close to home*. Now they are coming to Britain to spread their own brand of independent dance pop progressive pop to a wider audience. Their unique blend of independent spirit and pop music, plus a varied influence base which includes Rita Ora and Paramore at opposite ends of the spectrum, stands them in good stead to continue making a name for themselves on these shores.

And with the help of this slick, colourful video, they’re set to do just that.

Self-contained and very proud of it, the songs are composed, recorded and produced in house, as are the videos. It’s astounding that the production is so clean and crisp, mirroring the best work out there at the moment in spite of the band’s independence.

That talent has seen The HARDKISS become darlings of the festival scene around Europe, raising awareness that Ukranian music is on the rise. And with EDM laced pop so huge in the charts at the moment, the stage is set for the emergence of The HARDKISS.

Glistening synth pop from Cosby’s new ‘Summer Gold’ EP

Pop, Synth-Pop

A trio from Richmond, Virginia in the US, Cosby are a band on the rise. With their very own brand of upbeat synth pop with 1980s flavours, they combine anthemic melodies, smooth harmonies, driving guitar hooks, ethereal synth layers and dance beats to great effect on new EP ‘Summer Gold’.

PRimage

Influenced by the likes of Tears for Fears, Aha, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys but giving their own music a contemporary production sheen, the band were formed when brothers Chris and Chip Cosby joined forces after years of playing separately, the results were golden from the very start. Soon, Mike Levinson entered the fray as drummer and percussionist, and the band haven’t looked back since.

‘Summer Gold’ is the latest fruit of their labours, the quality of which is typified by the pace, energy and huge chorus of pulsating single ‘Heartracer’ – and it also helps that that the arcade game influenced video is a real treat:

Pulsating single ‘Heartracer’ to accompany May 11th EP release

Mixed and mastered by producer Andreas Magnusson, ‘Heartracer’ and the ‘Summer Gold’ EP is a follow up to previous album ‘In Flight’. With that album starting to open doors, 2015 will be Cosby’s year to smash through them on both sides of the Atlantic.
